FREE WORKSHOPS ON MONDAYS AND TUESDAYS
Story writing continues to be the major target area for Surrey County Council, particularly amongst boys. Having taught for over 17 years, I have developed a workshop to improve the performance of story writing in primary aged children. All sessions are fun, interactive, age appropriate and are run in line with the National Curriculum.
The ultimate objective of this workshop is to make all of your children far more enthusiastic and passionate about storytelling and subsequently story writing. It is well known that a lot of children have problems in formulating their initial ideas. My sessions will break down these barriers and provide your pupils with host of strategies for developing their stories. These workshops run in Line with the Literacy framework and fulfil a number of Key Stage 1 and 2 Literacy Objectives for Speaking and Listening and Writing.
We aim to give deep understanding of the following objectives:
Using character, action and narrative to convey story, themes, emotions and ideas in stories.
How to gain and maintain the interest and response of different audiences.
Using vocabulary and syntax that enables them to communicate more complex meanings.
How to talk effectively as members of a group. Using dramatic techniques to explore characters and issues.
Pupils should be taught about how language varies between spoken and written forms.
Broaden their vocabulary and use it in inventive ways.
Plan - note and develop initial ideas.
Revise - change and improve their draft
What does the workshop include?
Draft letter to parents outlining the objectives of the day.
I will lead an assembly (maximum 45 minutes). I can also run a question and answer session as part of this assembly if required.
I will lead and run up to 6 separate workshops (30 minutes maximum each) for any class between Reception and Year 6 inclusive. All materials will be provided - all you need to supply are the children, although I would appreciate it if you would provide me with a timetable of the classes I am going to visit prior to my arrival.
These workshops are then followed up by a writing task which the children must complete as homework on my website: 'storytellingisfun.com.'
The children can gain recognition for both themselves and the school if they win one of the monthly writing competitions. Schools that are members of my site will have the additional privilege of being able to access all submissions from their children and will be able to put forward their favourite stories from each year group as candidates for the monthly prizes.
If you are happy to do so it would be very helpful if you gain permission for a group of your children and staff to be videoed so that we can include their blogs on this website. I do ask that I am provided with time at the end of the school day and at the end of my individual workshop sessions to allow children and adults to purchase signed copies of my book 'I was a brussel sprout.' (priced at £4).
